EDUCATION

My high school education through the medium of Welsh made me open-minded from an early age and welcoming to new experiences and to acquiring new languages. As well as my formal education I have always taken a prominent role in extra-curricular activities. At school this included experiences ranging from sports teams and debating, to performing in dramas, choirs and orchestras. The varied activities & experiences I have always had have made me well-rounded, versatile, and always busy.
At University I continued to take an active role and always kept occupied looking out for the next challenge, whether this was playing for a football team, going on weekly mountaineering trips, or presenting a show on the University’s radio station. During my third year I took advantage of an Exchange opportunity that came up, and spent a semester at McGill University in Montreal, adapting to the different culture and university life, while making lifelong friends from all over the world.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Between April and July 2008 I have taken advantage of an opportunity to work for three months in France. This has provided a fantastic opportunity to be completely submerged in another culture and language every day, and to become more fluent in the French language itself. At work my task is to assist with the administration and logistics of a regional drawing competition, and with careers events. Amongst other things, this has involved writing press releases in French about the specific events.
In my previous job working in the education department at the Welsh Assembly Government I was part of a three-person team dedicated to implementing the new Foundation Phase curriculum for 3-5 year olds in Wales. My main task was to assist with the production of guidance material to be sent out to the country’s primary school teachers. This included selecting case studies and photographs from the focus groups, as well as writing supplementary material and translating sections into the Welsh language.
During my five years working at Techniquest Science Discovery Centre I feel I put myself forward into every possible area of the organisation through a mixture of training and secondment opportunities. My varied duties include making presentations; leading lectures, workshops and shows; managing and welcoming large groups in English, Welsh, and French; and organising children’s birthday parties. One of the most satisfying parts of the job was presenting a personal and interactive 30 minute show in the Planetarium several times a day. This presentation ranged from shows to children to more complex and scientific shows for older visitors. Frequently I worked on Outreach events - visiting schools with science exhibits and workshops, and making presentations in a portable planetarium. At a secondment opportunity at the Creative Development team I later had the chance to write and design school outreach activities for myself, and also had the experience of plotting a weekend of activities for the general public around the theme of ‘Forensic Science’. These experiences all served as an invaluable starting point for learning a range of teaching and presentation skills.

INTERESTS

Since childhood my primary hobby has always been with music, and through my work in composing music soundtracks for use in museum documentaries, this later became a more professional interest.
In general I enjoy travelling, languages, music, photography, current affairs, watching and playing sport, and reading. In my spare time I write for Cardiff’s “Buzz” Magazine, which provides various outlets to write creatively. I take advantage of any occasion I can to travel and to meet as many people as possible, and enjoy the challenge of living for a time in another country – not as a tourist so much as part of the country itself, learning and sharing with each other.
